Both 316 and 316L are austenitic stainless steels with around 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum content, with the lower carbon content of 316L (usually less than 0.03%) to facilitate weldability and prevent carbide precipitation. Both the alloys offer tensile strengths of about 515 MPa and yield strengths of about 205 MPa, coupled with superior toughness and ductility. Their property balance provides durability, pitting as well as crevice corrosion resistance, and good performance under oxidizing and mildly reducing conditions.
