316L stainless steel is an austenitic one having a composition of around 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum with a maximum of 0.03% carbon. This gives it superior resistance to pitting as well as crevice corrosion in environments rich in chlorides, like seawater and chemical processing streams. It has a tensile strength of about 485 MPa and a yield strength of about 170 MPa, accompanied by good ductility, toughness, and thermal stability.
