Both 317 and 317L are austenitic stainless steels having around 18% chromium, 12% nickel, and 3–4% molybdenum. The “L” grade has a reduced carbon content, usually less than 0.03%, which improves weldability and reduces carbide precipitation. These alloys exhibit tensile strengths of about 515 MPa and yield strengths close to 205 MPa, along with very good toughness and ductility. Their high corrosion resistance qualifies them to handle acidic and chloride-rich fluids at high temperatures.
